Survey of Knowledge and Attitudes of Junior College Students about AIDS

Abstract
The purpose of this descriptive study was to identify the attitudes and level of knowledge of junior college students concerning AIDS and to provide data for health education program.
The data were collected by means of a questionnaire given to 400 students from three junior colleges located in Seoul and Kyunggido from October 1 15, 1997.
The SPSS/pc+ program was used to calculate percentage, mean, and standard deviation. The findings of this study are summarized as follows;
1. On questions assessing students¢¥ general knowledge of AIDS, 62.5 percent of the respondents answered correctly, 18.58 percent answered incorrectly, and 19.23 percent answered¢¥I do not know. On questions assessing knowledge of transmission routes, 76.25 percent of the respondents answered correctly, 7.93 percent answered incorrectly, and 15.82 percent answered¢¥I do not know! Finally, on questions regarding knowledge of preventive measures, 78.6 percent of the respondents answered correctly, 8.8 percent answered incorrectly, and 12.42 percent answered¢¥I do not know!
2. The mean value of the total attitude toward AIDS was 3.769 of 5 :
The responsive attitude toward counselling and testing for AIDS was the lowest in this group with a mean value of 3.331. The responsive attitude toward HIV infected individuals was 3.664, the attitude toward information sources on AIDS was 3.917, and the sense of critical danger and fear of being infected was 3.997, The attitude toward vaccination against AIDS had the highest mean score, 4.384.
